History and charism of the Society

The Quebec Foreign Mission Society (SME) is an international missionary society composed by perpetual members (priests) and associates (priests and lay people).

It was founded in 1921 by the bishops of the Francophone Church of Canada to contribute to the announcement of the Gospel to all nations.

Originally formed almost exclusively by Canadians, it has gradually become international. The international character of the Society was made official in 1997.

The members and associates of the SME put themselves to the service of the Gospel to preach the Good News to the people of the world, so that they may have life in abundance in Jesus Christ. The SME wishes that through the fraternal life, the interculturality and the commitment which it testifies, it is a way to show the presence of Christ to those to whom He sends them.

The SME carries out its service by:

¯ welcoming, first of all, the cultural and religious values of the groups and people whose daily lives it shares;

¯ testifying, in return, its own faith;

¯ forming living and missionary communities inside the host communities;

¯ engaging itself in the promotion of justice and respect for human dignity.

Missionary teams of the SME, composed of priests and lay people, are located in Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Honduras and Peru), Africa (Kenya), Asia (Cambodia, China, Japan and the Philippines) and Canada, where our Society was founded.
