 LAUDATO DEUM 2023.

In a prophetic tone, Pope Francis released his new Apostolic Exhortation titled "Laudato Deum" or "Praise God", this October 4th, 2023. He highlights the peril of human beings not properly caring for our Common House, stressing the need for urgent and significant changes. These changes are crucial to prevent potentially irreversible damage, or at best, a damage that might take centuries to reverse. He emphasizes that the current Western human development model may make humanity its own worst enemy.

Released on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, this document is a continuation of his 2015 encyclical, "Laudato si'," focusing on integral ecology. The Pope rings the alarm bells about the climate crisis and calls for shared responsibility, especially as the COP28 is on the horizon in Dubai.

The Pope acknowledges the undeniable signs of climate change, urging for immediate action. He stresses that the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. He rebuts the misconception that the poor are to blame for climate change, emphasizing that affluent nations contribute significantly to emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. He also challenges the notion that climate change mitigation efforts would lead to job losses, advocating for a shift to renewable energy and its potential for job creation.

Addressing the anthropogenic origins of climate change, Pope Francis underscores the rapid escalation of environmental degradation and highlights the need for responsible human intervention. He criticizes the prevalent technocratic paradigm, urging humanity to recognize its limits and prioritize ethical considerations. The Pope advocates for stronger international cooperation and voices disappointment in the inadequacy of previous climate conferences, offering concrete options on how to generate new models of international cooperation that can be used in a different and more efficient, representative and inclusive setting than the present model. Looking ahead to COP28, he calls for a decisive acceleration towards clean energy and emphasizes the urgency of the energy transition.

Furthermore, Pope Francis stresses the need to view climate change as a human and societal issue, urging collective involvement and dismissing its trivialization. He calls for a transformation in lifestyle and culture to effect lasting change, emphasizing that personal actions contribute to broader societal transformations. The Pope concludes by urging a shift from an irresponsible Western lifestyle and emphasizes the potential for positive change through genuine care for one another.
