FORMATIVE APOSTOLIC INTERNSHIPS
The Quebec Foreign Mission Society has been present in Kenya since the year 2000. They established in Nairobi their Theological Formation Centre for young men considering missionary priesthood, replacing the Grand Seminary in Laval, Canada, where the pioneers of the Society, its first foreign mission priests (p.m.e.), were formed and sent forth.
Moreover, with the later opening up of the Society to accept lay people, and considering the large number of lay associates currently within the Society, it has recently opened up a second formation centre in Kenya, where lay candidates wishing to join the Society will go through the second stage of their formation process alongside seminary hopefuls.
Kenya was chosen by the SME as an ideal formation site due to the ready availability of resources specially suited to the Society’s needs, particularly the parish in Namanga, which is located in the land of the Maasai people in the south. This environment lends itself perfectly to learning about one’s capacity for the openness and commitment necessary for missionary life according to the charism of the Society.
The collaboration of other missionary institutes is essential for missionary formation. Two organizations host our interns during their training at the CFM. The first internship takes place at the New Life Home. This organization of the Missionaries of Charity in Kibera welcomes people with specific physical and intellectual needs. The second experience is at the self-sufficient ecological farm called 3000 FRIENDS, managed by the Yarumal missionaries. Here are the testimonies of Pedro and Mariela, two young people in formation with the SMÉ, on the importance of these internships for cultivating fraternal life and discerning their missionary vocation.
AFRICAN CULTURE WORKSHOP
The recent African Cultural Workshop held in collaboration with MFC, TFCK, Local Group, Partners in Mission and animated by Bobby Pall, was a huge success. The event brought together people from different backgrounds to learn, celebrate African culture and its rich history. The workshop included a range of activities, performances, storytelling. Participants also had the opportunity to learn about African art, cuisine, and traditional clothing etc.
In conclusion, the African Cultural Workshop was an inspiring and educational event that brought people together to celebrate and learn about African culture. It serves as a reminder of the richness and diversity of African cultures and the importance of promoting cross-cultural understanding and dialogue
